Questionnaire answer analysis.

This post will be analysing my results from my questionnaire and showing how they will affect the production of my film opening.

question 1: in a zombie movie who would you expect to die first?

In this question most people who responded said they would expect a dumb blonde to die above the rest. This will be reflected in my movie as a dumb blonde type character will be the first to die in the opening scene of the film.

question 2: who would you like to blame for the zombie apocalypse?

most people who responded to this question said they would like to blame the government for a zombie outbreak, this will slightly reflected by movie as it was government scientist developing the Nano-bots for the military so some of the blame can be laid on them however it was the soldiers who accidentally released the bots from the lab so blam can be on them too. However seen as it was the government who actually developed the bots so they are more to blame therefore my audience will be pleased at the fact that i have included their chosen scapegoat.

question 3: would you prefer a big budget hollywood production or a low-budget indie film?

the majority of people who responded said they would prefer a low-budget indie film to one of hollywoodesque proportions which will be reflected by the fact that my movie is a low-budget production, this partly because it is literally a low-budget production but also because i enjoy watching cleverly written indie films than big budget productions with lots of special effects and explosions but enough story to fill about 5 minutes of screen time.

question 4: would you prefer a happy conclusive ending or a depressing one that leaves a lot or some questions unanswered?

the respondents to this question said that they would prefer an ending with a little more mystery than one that leaves everything resolved and concluded, i don’t know about the ending to my film as i haven’t thought that far ahead but the ending to my opening will leave some mystery open to entice my audience into watching the rest of the movie.

question 5: what would be a good title for the movie?

most of the people who responded to this question said they would like the title “OH GOD THE DEAD ARE COMING BACK TO LIFE AND SHIT!” but i decided i would go with the more catchy ‘Nano’ because it reveals a little bit about the film but not enough that my audience will not want to watch it because they know everything about it. It is also short and snappy which will make my audience remember it better therefore it will be on their mind for a while much like Rec. the spanish zombie movie filmed entirely in POV

in conclusion my movie will contain from what this questionnaire tells me most of the things my audience will want to see in it, however after all this is my own production and if i bang something in that they don’t like oh well.

Zombies in the media and how they will affect my films

This will be an overview of movie zombies and how they will affect the way my film portrays and uses the zombie theme. I wish to create a unique zombie as the original zombie has been recycled countless times in countless movies.

In order to do this i will be writing an overview of the different kinds of zombies used in film and video games.

Resident Evil zombie:

THE zombies featured in Resident Evil are the old conventional zombies, slow, shambling, easy to avoid, fun to kill. While they don’t offer any real challenge to the film or game’s protagonist they do offer more scare value than the running zombie. I feel this is because when a zombie runs at you full pelt you are not able to see its features properly before you blow its head off, therefore you are not able to take in how grotesque it looks. Also a zombie that can run seems more human, as humans are able to run, but a zombie that is limited to only a slow tormented shuffle seems more like a monster than a crazy human. Resident Evil’s zombies are also reanimated corpses brought to life by a virus, this means their skin is all decomposing and nasty, they also have the characteristic white eyes which is caused by lack of something or other in the eyes after you die. this generally makes them really creepy.

Land of the dead zombie:

These zombies are rather similar to the ones in Resident Evil, However due to the fact that they have been around for years they have begun to re gain some intelligence. They appear to have organized themselves into a tribe like unity with the black, boiler suit zombie as their leader. This zombie has also apparently remembered how to use a rifle and open doors. They have also began to shed their animatistic instinct as they are capable of dealing with problems better than conventional zombies. For example when a conventional zombie is faced with an obstacle it will try to go around it, as it lacks the intelligence to comprehend how to defeat it. However when the zombie tribe is faced with a lake they have the intelligence to realize they can walk through it to the main city where all the humans are to feast upon.

Day of the dead zombies:

These zombies are similar to the ones just mentioned because they are both slightly intelligent. The zombies from day of the dead keep segments of their personality or memory from when they were humans. For example the female soldier’s mother remembering their voices and the communications technician still being a vegetarian and thus not nomming the other characters. If I remember correctly they are also runners. So this movie combines 2 innovative zombie themes into one.

28 days later zombie:

It is to my knowledge that these little bastards were the first ever runners. This movie uses the runner genre to its highest effect. In away these zombies are still scary in that movie, however they are more jump scares than mess you up mentally scares. I will not be concentrating on this particular breed of the undead as I prefer slow, stupid zombies (with the exception of left 4 dead) but the fact that they were unique and the first of their kind will influence my movie zambies.

In conclusion the zombies in the media are progressively becoming more intelligent  however i want my zombies to be completely retarded but exceptional in combat, this is because the message of my movie will be that the best soldier is one who is completely inhuman as i am against the military, therefore this will spread the message that soldiers are brain dead shells of people who can only follow orders.

They will however not be walking corpses therefore they don’t have to be covered in wounds or anything, nano bots can close up wounds anyway, the only way to kill them will be to shoot them in the head. This will also save money on special effects and stuff. Also nano bots haven’t been featured in a modern film in a long time so my film will be able to resurrect them into the mainframe because frankly they’re bloody terrifying

Movie plot ideas

The year is 2019 , the british government has begun testing a new technology to create a new breed of soldier more resilient and stronger than anything ever seen before but completely brain-dead so as they can follow orders with no obligation. This only remained a secrete for a short while, human rights activists caught wind of this and alerted the local authorities. An investigation swiftly began which unearthed evidence of gross negligence of human rights such as human testing and brainwashing. In light of this an armed response unit (allied with a small militia of activists) seized the building in an effort to stop the spread of this project.

The siege was partly successful, the doctors and scientists involved were  either arrested or shot on sight and all test subjects were released. One of the subjects was in the final stages of the project. Under threat the solider lashed out, in his immense strength he killed three of the officers involved in the siege and escaped from the base. It was then discovered that the process in which these soldiers were transformed was an airborne collection of Nano-bots capable of altering human DNA and making them awesome. These Nano-bots escaped with the soldier into the surrounding area. Initially the cause of the outbreak was a virus. However I changed this idea as Nano-bots are a more realistic reason for crazy ass mutant zombies as Nano-bots actually exist and are actually capable of rendering a host brain dead and using their body for crazy diabolical things all being controlled by some d00d with a big-ass computer.

The nano-bots got into the near by school. a student was instantly effected and attacked an armed student at the bottom of the stairs. Two more students happen upon the corpse of the deceased and steal his weapon (just incase) and venture out to find the thing responsible for their friend’s death. In their wake they find two more students that have been savaged and a trail of blood (figuratively) leading them to the cause of their fallen comrades. they manage to track down the Zombie responsible for killing their friends, the armed student shoots the bitch but with its improved endurance he begins to walk towards them. The unarmed student takes up his own arms against the zombie and begins to try to bludgeon it to death but the zombie manages to kill him. the other armed student, realizing his efforts are futile, takes his own life.

The film then cuts to a few days into the future where some other students from the school affected are watching a broadcasting of the incident on the local news program.

Movie opening: My ideas

For my AS coursework i wish to create a zombie movie. This genre has been recreated and reproduced to death (no pun intended) and for this reason it will be hard to use original ideas. It also requires a lot of stuff like costumes, make up and props (mise en scene)  so as a way around this i will have to come up with a story or reason for the new situation of zombie apocalypse that doesn’t require the use of too much make up as not only would this be costly but it would also take a lot of time that I don’t have.

I think that setting is also vitally important to zombie movies as it has to look authentic enough otherwise it wont look like the world has been overrun by flesh hungry zombies it will just look like an ass little movie some guy has made in their mother’s basement which though this movie probably will be like that i would like to avoid it looking like it. Because of this i am either thinking of an urban landscape such as Sheffield City Center, some woods somewhere or a house as long as it looks creepy enough.

Though i am trying to avoid it as much as possible some props will need to be used, for example I’d like a gun scene in there somewhere so I will have to go out and purchase a toy gun from somewhere or something just to make it look better than someone using their hand in a crude imitation of a pistol.

I will also be looking to include some homage’s to the zombie movie genre or zombie games. For example i will be looking to include the scene from the first Resident Evil game where Chris is stood at the bottom of some stairs and in a POV shot a zombie stumbles down and attacks him. This will not only make Resident Evil fans think “oo I remember that, that’s impressive” but anyone who has not been into contact with the source material will also be impressed with the camera techniques.

I think all action and suspense aside story is vital to any zombie movie. As i mentioned earlier film and game producers have used the zombie think to death, a gripping story is the only think keeping people watching and playing these games. This is further highlighted in film because at least in the video games the audience is physically involved in the process. My story will have to be at least vaguely original to captivate an audience into watching the rest of the movie therefore most of my opening will be dedicated to introducing the audience to the story and the events that are to come. To do this i am thinking about using a voice over, over footage of zombies, or maybe just in a dark room or something just something where it is like someone in the film who has been involved in the zombie situation is explaining to the audience what has happened. Although this has been used in films before (I am legend, Diary of the Dead) I think it is a brilliant way to get the story out-of-the-way so we can get to some old fashion zombie killing  moments because countless times I have dived into zombie movies or games with no apparent story and have been like “ok so there are zombies but… why are there zombies, give me back story dammit!!” so this sequence will get rid of that problem early on and in an imaginative way.

Zombie movies have also begun to have deep morals hidden underneath all the brain chomping head exploding madness (Dance of the Dead: Pollution is evil, 28 Days later: Don’t trust the military ect) so in my opening I would like to introduce a new moral to the movie.

As for a basis for a story there are many conventional options to choose from

  • The dead are coming back to life because of satan or summit
  • there’s a virus or a disease that for some reason makes you zombies
  • they tried to cure a horrible disease that ended in zombies (I am legend)
  • the government did it

I’m thinking of going with a new method (Nano technology) this way i will not need to spend a lot of money on make up because they will just look like normal people, however I will have to buy a considerable amount of fake blood and there will still be some costume and prop aspects needed.

In conclusion there are  a lot of aspects I would like to put into this opening, they will not all be easy but i feel they will be fun to do. I hope to create an interesting and captivating look on the zombie genre as a means to keep my audience interested. My target audience will be teenagers to young adults, this is due to the video game references and that these age groups are usually the ones to enjoy zombie movies, specifically teenage and young adult males. The opening will not be for a big budget production but for an indie film (such as Dance of the Dead, one of my fave zombie movies) and will be like a ‘Straight to DVD’ release or something posted on the internet that somehow ends up on sky movies like 2 years after it was made.

Shot Composition: In my own words.

Framing: Framing is boxing in a character or a few characters within the environment of what you are shooting, creating a sense of captivity or making the shot more visually appealing.

Deep Focus: Deep Focus is where everything in shot can be seen, there is no restrictions on what is in focus and what is blurred. This means that you can see everything going on around the character, not just the character themselves. This usually means that everything going on around the character is important or there is something to look out for in the environment not just on the character.

Shallow Focus: Shallow Focus is when only one specific object or character in shot is in focus and everything around them is blurred, thus focusing all attention on the character or object and highlighting that they are the most important or interesting thing on-screen. It can also be used to convey a sense of captivity like framing or to show that the character is self-centered or out-of-place.

Focus Pull: This is when you are in shallow focus and then you pull over to something else in shot that was blurred and use shallow focus on that. This is useful as you can redirect the focus of the audience without changing shot.

Depth Of Field: This is like focus only instead of how blurred or clear something is draws the audience’s attention to it this is the amount of light and other things in the background that draw your attention to the character or object.

Rule Of Thirds: Rule of thirds is where the character or object in focus is on the 3rd quarter of the shot instead of in the middle. This means that the audience can see things in the environment as well but not as well as they would if they were in deep focus. This also makes the shot appear more visually appealing which is why is it used often in photography as well as in the film industry.
